2011 Summer Reading Programs For Kids

Do you have any avid readers in the home?  We definitely do!

We are infatuated with reading  in our house so it is only natural that we participate in all of the summer reading programs our community has to offer.  I thought I would share some of the programs we have found.

All of the following programs are for kids age birth and up.  Enjoy!

1)  Local City LibraryNearly every city library offers a summer reading program.  Make sure you check yours out.

2)  Local County Library:  Many large cities also have local county libraries that run their own summer reading program.  Make sure to participate.

3)  Barnes and Noble:

With this program, children of any age need to read 8 books. After they fill out their “Imagination’s Destination Reading Journal” they get to choose one free book from an approved list.  This program runs from May 24th through September 6th.  One fun thing about this program is for every child you have enter, the parent also gets entered into a drawing for a free Nook!

4)  Borders and Waldenbooks:

This summer, kids age 12 and under can face the “double dog dare” challenge.  If they read 10 books of their own choosing and fill out the summer reading form, they can receive one free book from an approved list.  This program runs from June 1st  through September 5th.

5)  Half Price Books:

Kids ages 14 and under can participate in this summer reading program called “Feed Your Brain.”  They can earn a $5 Half Price Books shopping card if they read for at least 600 minutes in the months of June and July.  Just make sure to fill out their reading log and turn in the form between July 25th and August 7th to receive your coupon.

So get your reading hats on, check out what your community offers and jump into the summer reading program fun.  It is a great way to exercise your brain and to keep your kids’ minds sharp all summer long!

Also, if you know of any additional summer reading programs, please feel free to share the wealth in the comments section!
