A few weeks ago, Rudy mentioned a couple of different times how he thought little Eli was starting to look kind of like a girl. He thought Eli’s hair was getting too long and shaggy.

I should have taken a before shot. This was from the
beginning of September.
Learning how to cut hair is something I have always wanted to do [kind of like how I eventually want to take voice lessons and how I eventually want to take photography lessons and how I eventually want to learn how to sew and how I eventually want to take piano lessons again], but right now I don’t know the first thing about how to do it. I once shaved my brother’s head in high school … with clippers even … and it looked wrong. Just wrong.
I have also attempted to trim Cory’s and Keri’s hair before, but I wasn’t overly fond with the way it turned out. It seemed somewhat crooked and lopsided to me.
Apparently my domestic/homemaking skills are non-existent in this department. That doesn’t come as too much of a surprise to me, though, because in general I don’t have much of an artistic or creative flair. It is hard for me to even visualize things in my head. Perhaps that is why I didn’t like geometry in high school, but I adored algebra and calculus.
I think my older brother got all the art and design genes in the family. Although, somehow those genes have been passed on to my kids. Both Keri, who is 8, and Cory, who is 4, draw WAY better than me. Even my stick figures tend to be crooked.
Anyway, I didn’t feel like shelling out a bunch of cash to go get Eli’s hair cut, so I decided to try and take on the project by myself. I was a bit nervous, but I did search the Internet for some tips on how to cut kids hair, especially toddlers hair when they don’t want to hold still.
If I do say so myself, it didn’t turn out as bad as I thought it would. His bangs aren’t the straightest thing in the world, but for the most part I think it looks kind of decent. Especially since I only used scissors and no clippers.

However, now that he has his hair cut, he looks much older to me. He looks like a little boy, not a little baby.

I miss my baby!
But I am glad he is growing up. Just don’t grow up too fast, OK little one?

Keri would put anyone’s artistic skills to shame – that is one talented little girl! And we have a very, very similar evenually-want-to-learn list. Nifty!
I think the back view especially looks quite professional. I don’t think I could manage half so well!

He’s a cute little guy (whether he looks like a boy or a girl). And I didn’t realize until now how much Eli looks like Cory around the same age.

Good job! I’m super impressed, especially on a baby! That’s not easy. It took me a lot of years to get to where I’m pretty comfortable cutting John’s hair. I still haven’t gotten there with my kids. (but I’ve practiced on John once a month for 9 years). Way to be an artistic, thrifty mama! You rock!

He looks so cute and grown-up. We have the same shirt too bad we aren’t close enough to take a picture of our two boys in matching shirts.(I think all 3 of my boys have worn it) I haven’t mastered cutting my kids either but I have a hard time cutting paper straight. It’s extra hard when their hair is so light because you can see every cut. Alyssa passed me up a long time ago when it comes to anything to do with art.

I just cut Sam and Charlie’s hair too. Let me just say that you did a much better job than I did. I just cringe looking at their hair ’cause it’s pretty bad. Also, I think we are the same person. All of your “eventuallys” are the same as mine. I’ve always wanted to be able to sing and play the piano and do photography….maybe someday when all the kids are grown we can get around to it!

Nice job. I am still working on my list. Love you.

So, I actually cut all my boys hair, but I do the buzz thing. You did way better than I do.
I’m always amazed at how much that first haircut makes them grow up. And it always makes me, like you, a little sad.

Oh, you cut your little boy’s hair MUCH better than my attempt at mine. He still needs to get a better haircut, but lately he looks like a crazy weird scientist

I should leave a note that even I was shocked with how decent his hair turned out
!! Although, I doubt I could duplicate it again. I think luck was on my side …. something akin to beginner’s luck.

I’m hopping over here from Bells on their toes blog.
I agree, hair cuts are good things to master as a mama and can be big money savers. Love your son’s hair cut. Makes him look like a little man.
