Relishing Motherhood

One of the highlights of my day?

3-kids-reading

It was early evening and I could feel the lovely witching hours fast approaching.  To avoid disaster at the end of a relatively good day, I promptly declared, “Couch time.  Get some books and read.”   (Their other option?  An early bed time.)

I am beyond thrilled this spontaneous tactic worked beautifully.  The kids sat and read together for nearly 45 minutes … well, little Eli didn’t participate for quite that long.  He only lasted for a moment because he would rather eat and crinkle these types of books as opposed to read them and look at the pictures.

Some other highlights of the day?

Chatting with a dear friend, creating and coloring Mother’s Day cards, eating chocolate chip buttermilk waffles and taking a sunny walk through the “forest.”

Was it the perfect day?  Not entirely.  But compared with yesterday it was wonderful.

I am grateful for the tender mercies the Lord continually gives me.

  • I love “tricking” my kids into reading together by calling it a “reading party.” It’s an awesome time–and it’s good for them too! Those are some real sweet moments for sure.

  • Keri’s a good big sister, isn’t she? I love these pictures. Maybe couch time will have to become a regular thing.

  • Very sweet! I agree with Rudy–Couch time every day! I love your kids and I’m glad today was a good day. I hope tomorrow is just as good or better! ♥

  • Sounds like you’ve created a wonderful new thing called couch time!

  • What a cute picture. My kids have reading time every day as well.

  • I love those moments. It’s so great when the older ones can read to the little ones.

  • I learn so many brilliant idea from you, lady!

  • Wonderful idea.
Would you share your recipe for chocolate chip waffles?

  • Couch time is a great idea! And I noticed Keri being a good sister when she told her little bro not to take the tack out of the tack board. What good kids you have. And I’m glad couch time gave you a good 45 min. of quiet.

  • good for you. i’m afraid that too often when the witching hour hits i let the kids turn on the t.v. so they’ll give me the peace and quiet i crave. i’m going to try this trick next time.

    way to relish motherhood!

  • I adore those moments.

(I missed the book contest. :( I might go and buy me both of those though.)

  • I would have grabbed my camera too for a moment like that…love the way he’s leaning into his big sis. I need to keep my eyes open to these “tender mercies”.

  • I live for “couch time”. Although I haven’t yet called it that, and it doesn’t happen nearly enough. I might have to steal this.

And just driving home from a family party tonight I was contemplating the abundance of tender mercies…

  • It sounds like you’ve created a good mothering memory. Ahh… :)
