During the most recent General Conference meeting which our Church held, my seven year old daughter, Keri, diligently took notes. Did we ask her to do so? No. She made this decision all on her own.
Not only did she take notes on what the leaders had to say, but she also wrote down some of her own personal thoughts which she later shared with Rudy and me.
- Choose the right.
- Read the scriptures.
- Follow the prophet every day.
- Be nice to everybody.
- Love other people.
- If you want to do something fun but you have to do something else that is not fun, go and do it.
- Be happy.
- When somebody does something nice to you say thank you.
- Be thankful.
- Forgive other people.
- Trust Jesus.
- Don’t tell lies.
- If somebody does something nice to you do something nice to them.
- Teach the gospel to other people.
- If you’re tempted to do something wrong don’t do it.
- If you do something bad to someone say sorry.
- If someone gets hurt go and help them even if you don’t know them.
- If you want something and your mom says no don’t get mad.
- If you need to be quiet but you want to be loud be quiet.
- Don’t yell at other people.
- Be a good example.
- Keep a promise.
- Be cheerful.
- If you are at a place that you really like and somebody says that you need to go home don’t get mad.
- Listen to Jesus.
- Sometime go to the Temple.
- Jesus loves us and Heavenly Father does too.
- Have faith.
- When you get a present say thank you.
There is so much I can learn from this sweet and precious child of mine. She has such a deep and abiding testimony which inspires me to want to be a better mother to her and her siblings.
A few of the thoughts she shared also shed some light on things I need to change about my parenting behavior. For example, I need to learn to not to shush my kids so often and I need to learn to find more ways to say “yes” to them.

And on a completely separate note, many people are asking me how Cory’s haircut went. It was a raging success! Cory even allowed them to use clippers in the beginning. That in and of itself amazed me.
For the most part Cory sat still, ate his Skittles and watched the show they put on for him. Of course he got a little fidgety towards the end, but then the hair stylist gave him the blow dryer to play with while she finished up and that kept him distracted.
**Cory sporting his new short look … extra short so we don’t have to get it cut for awhile.**
Since he did so well on his haircutting adventure, afterwards we went to the toy store so he could pick out a new $0.99 Matchbox police car. Of course that is what he is clutching in his hand in the picture.

Wow, so sweet. Out of the mouth of babes…
I love simplicity of her list. Like “If you are tempted to do something wrong don’t do it.” If only everyone would do that!
You really need to save (or frame) what Keri said about you. Maybe we should get the girls together so she can rub off on mine!
And Cory, awww, he looks so good. Good thing he isn’t older and understands what bargaining power he really has!
that is the best general conference summary I have ever seen. Honestly. She learned the way we all should learn… by the Spirit.
She is so smart! And her handwriting is amazing! My kids had a hard time listening for certain words to put a candy on the bingo card! Wasn’t conference wonderful?
Keri took much better notes than I did. She’s quite the little smarty! And Cory is darling as ever — long hair or short.
Quite an impressive list of notes! What a treasure that will be.
Cory’s haircut is great. Good for him for being such a good boy!
Wow! What a treasure. What a blessing conference is broadcast into the home and in church buildings. We didn’t have that when I was young. I couldn’t listen to it until I attended BYU. Then that was on the radio. They didn’t put the conference reports in the ENSIGN until the Improvment Era became the Ensing in the 70′s? Thanks for the post.
Love
Mom;)
Great haircut! He is so precious too
what a sweetheart!
As my oldest is only 4 I had trouble getting them to sit still long enough to even listen to the primary choir. I was just content with the fact that they played quietly enough downstairs for the rest of us to enjoy, although I think your 7 year old got more out of it than I did!
Those are awesome notes. Now if only I could follow them. . .
Conference was so great this year, especially Saturday afternoon.
Cory looks great!
Wow…. I can DEFINITELY take some notes from a 7 year old. I didn’t take away near that many. It is true we can learn from children. Wow….I wish I could meet her.
Oh that girl…what an extraordinary girl she is continuing to become.
And the hair-do just emphasizes his cuteness. What fabulous kids you have!
I’m impressed with how much Keri got out of conference. Everyone listened to all 4 sessions but I felt frustrated that it didn’t go smoother. I thought I was well prepared but I realized I could have done more to be better prepared. I’m not sure if they learned anything except that when it’s General Conference we are all together and listen. I’m so glad Cory’s haircut when good and yeah that he won’t need another one for awhile!
What a great list of things that she learned. You really can learn a lot from a child.
That’s great your dd is taking notes already! My dd didn’t until she was 9.
You are doing something right. I definitely believe your children learn from you, even though it may seem very little. We’re all learning.
there has never EVER been a cuter, sweeter little girl the K with her notes! I-AM-DYING!! oh please give her a kiss from me! she is so so precious! and you should for sure send this into the Ensign – the whole world needs to know this story!
and C is looking so handsome! what a good little guy to get his haricut. did R ever tell you that we have an old school family portrait where he is holding candy (possibly skittles) in his little hand because that is the only way he would chill out enough to get the picture??? now we know where C gets it from…as if there was ever a doubt about that!
How sweet…That is so impressive that she was able to get all of those wonderful thoughts from Conference! Also – as a teacher, I have to say that her handwriting is GREAT! She is also a fantastic speller. I am impressed. And a very cute haircut on her little bro!
Wow! She took notes all on her own! That’s impressive. I could barely get my kids to stay quiet while playing with the legos while listening to conference.
Wow, I am so impressed! It is amazing what our kids can teach us sometimes. You must be doing something right with her!
i am so impressed and humbled by Keri’s notes and thoughts during conference. it makes me realize that i need to encourage my kids to participate in conference more. look how much she got out of it. you have got to save those notes for her to look at again someday.
That journal is V-E-R-Y impressive! What a darling girl!
I am very impressed. Wow. You’ve got quite a mature gal there! Totally the Spirit!
