One of the “perks” … if I dare even say that … of having a high risk pregnancy is you are able to have quite a few ultrasounds to check on the growth and development of the baby.
At the end of April I had a 27 week ultrasound and I was beyond thrilled that this little tyke was measuring on the “average” size, supposedly putting him about 7 1/2 pounds at birth.
This to me was glorious news because Keri was born 12 days early at 8 lbs 3 oz, 21 inches (with 4 hours of pushing) and Cory was born 8 days early at 9 lbs 1 oz, 22 inches (after 40 minutes of pushing). This isn’t too terribly enormous, but I did end up with nearly 4th degree episiomities with both deliveries and that is what I am aiming to avoid this time around. That is if I have any control over it. After both of my previous births it hurt to sit for two weeks. I normally ended up using the boppy to sit on as opposed to nursing with it.
Well, my fantasy of a smaller newborn only lasted about a month. Just recently I had another appointment … a very long appointment might I add. I had my weekly non-stress test scheduled, then an ultrasound and then a doctor’s appointment. This turned into a very long morning of waiting, waiting and more waiting.
After waiting for the nurse practitioner for almost an hour, I finally had had it and left the exam room to go and find a nurse to calmly and civilly (and almost on the verge of tears – it had been a rough week) tell them I was leaving and would be back for my next appointment the following week. After all, based on the results of my ultrasound and non-stress test I knew the baby was doing fine. I was just tired of sitting in horridly, uncomfortable chairs, paying for hourly parking, wasting my morning, and I felt bad for my sitter who was graciously watching Cory. I guess one should complain stand up for their rights more often because they ended up comping my parking and they had a different nurse practitioner come in to see me immediately.
Anyway, at my 32 week ultrasound I found out this “little” man is already just a couple ounces under five pounds! He is in the 88th percentile.
I suppose I should be grateful I normally am induced for medical reasons at least a week or two early. I don’t even think I want to imagine what size my kids would be at birth if I went a week past my due date?!?
8 months pregnant

What great news! Hope your little man keeps on growing…slowly. Good going speaking up at the doctor’s office.
You do not look 8 months pregnant – wow! And good for you for speaking up…we don’t do that near often enough.
My long torso tends to “hide” that big baby
!! Even when I was in the hospital and ready to deliver Cory, the nurses thought I would be having a nice seven pound baby. They should have listened to me when I told them that would not be the case.
You look fab!
I feel you about the big babies, although I am happy to say that all of the alarmist predictions for Bun’s size (based on ultrasound) were wrong. I was induced for other medical reasons, but the doctor kept telling me he was already 8 pounds and I was only 36 wks.
Bun was born 3 weeks early and he was “only”
7 lbs 12 oz. The perfect size – not like Sally who barrelled her way out at 9lbs 3oz.
Best wishes for you as you near the end
You look so fabulous! Thank you for the picture! I love to see your smile! Good for you for going to get them! I’m glad they were good to you after that. You really do look bright and happy in that picture!
much love!
You look great! There is nothing worse than being pregnant and having to wait forever for your appointment. Cute maternity clothes!
I have big babies, too. My doc was worried about it this time around, but I haven’t torn much if at all (depending on the delivery) and so I am not sure what he wants to do about it, at this point. I have had to be induced with both and they were late and 9.5 and 9 lbs. I’m hoping the trend continues and I get an 8.5 pounder this time!
It’s nice that you have room to store that baby! I haven’t gotten huge, yet either and I think I was a lot bigger with the last two. I think it helps that I haven’t gained the 50+ lbs I did before!
I make them large-ish as well. At least they are telling you it’s big. On my last pregnancy my midwife kept saying, “Oh this is a normal 7 pounder.” I didn’t believe her and I’m glad I didn’t, because he came out 8’7″–my biggest, though not compared to yours. Here’s hoping and my very best wishes that you make it through this next month and don’t tear! You are still fabulous!
You look great!
I grow ‘em huge as well. My last two were 10 pounds and 10 pounds 2 ounces (right within a day or two of their due dates). Luckily I still delivered them vaginally. I’m afraid of what would happen if I ever got gestational diabetes.
You’re looking beautiful!!
You look fantastic! My last baby was 9 lbs, 11 oz. This one looks like it will be bigger as well. During my last ultrasound I was told the baby is measuring about two weeks farther along than I’m supposed to be. I guess that would indicate big.
And please – don’t talk about “4 hours pushing” right now.
:-)
Hope things continue to go well for you and baby! (I’ll be looking out for the announcement in July.)
Let the countdown begin! I love big chubby newborns. Hope it all continues to go well!
Oh my, I hope he comes out nice and easy for you without any tearing!!! Mr. H’s favorite thing to sing to me when I’m pregnant is
“Ten pounder baby, I don’t mean maybe. Ten pounder baby, with shoulders THIS WIDE.”
Sweet Terror was my biggest at over 9 pounds. I’m hoping this one will be a bit smaller.
You look absolutely fabulous at this stage of the term. I hope this next month is a very good one for you!
you look great. adorable, in fact. i just remember how perpetually tired i was in my third trimester–especially once i already had a couple kids. hang in there. and don’t feel so guilty about the excessive tv watching that you mentioned on my blog. they’ll be fine in the end!:)
You look great! I have 100 percentile children, so I know your thoughts! This is so fun! Enjoy your last minutes!
You’re a hottie! Especially for carrying an 88th percentile baby.
Good luck!
Wow, you’re looking great at 8 months, girl!
How fun, a boy!
What a great picture!
It is a “perk” to get to see the little bugger more than most. With my last two I had non-stress tests every week for the last 2 months. It does get really tiring, but the extra ultra-sounds are cool.
I think the mom’s gut instinct is a great gauge on the size issue. I could just tell the baby felt bigger or smaller and I was right every time. The doctor really can only give a rough guess anyway.
You look great! I am a gigantico hippo at the end. So exciting for you. Only a short time left!!
Glad to have you a part of the big baby club.
You look good!
And way to stand up.
You look great! SEriously, your eight months look is MY five months pregnant. No lie!!!
You look beautiful!!! Congrats!!! My kids were all late. The 3rd one was 14 days late and weighed 10lbs 3oz and was 23 3/4 in. DANG…that hurt!!!!! I love the little poop though. She’ll be 11 in August.
Babies of any size are wonderful! You look fabulous, by the way.
Wow!! You look great for 8 months prego. And how fun having all of those ultrasounds. Sorry about the long wait. Waiting rooms are not much fun. Way to speak up. It’s true that the squeeky wheel gets the oil! Ü
This is my first time looking at your blog, but I have to say that you look WAY too good for being 8 months prego!! Congrats on that!!! I hope all goes well with the next month!
you at 8 months was what I was at, at 5 months. I was HUGE! I got so sick and tired of people asking if I was having twins
You look good! I grow ‘em big too. I enjoyed the extra ultrasounds and non-stress tests with my twins (extra risk due to twins–7 lb. 5 oz and 7 lb. 11 oz), and I missed them when I had my daughter (9 lb. 1 oz). Definitely good for reassurance that all was well.
You look great for 8 months pregnant! Good luck to you!
Well, you look darling. At least it’s only the belly that gets big!
My tiny Honduran friend is 5’1″ and recently had an 11 lb. baby. That just doesn’t seem right!!
Congratulations on your baby. You look great! Here’s fond wishes coming your way for an easy delivery.
You look sooooo good! And I love that shirt! Way cute!
I was small when pregnant with both my children… however when I had my son they gasped that he was 7lbs 13ozs given how small I was.
Feel free pop by and say hello.
Wow! You look amazing! My “Little” guy was 11 lbs 4 oz…….I was induced a week after his due date….. and after 39 hours, they decided he wasn’t coming out on his own….so I had a c-section. 11’4″ No wonder he wasn’t coming out!!!!!!!!!
Now I hold babies and think, my Gosh, my little guy was NEVER this little!
Mine were 9 lbs 9 oz and 8 lbs 13 oz. When see babies that were 5 or 6 lbs at birth, it floors me at how tiny they are. Not to mention the babies that at 3 or 4 months are the size mine were at birth. It’s surreal.
PS-you look really cute. I wish I were that cute at 8 months preggo. I look more like a crazed mad woman at that point.
When is the due date?
Neat post
I am high risk, too, so I had zillions of u/s’s. It’s fun having so many, I totally agree. That is definitely a plus. Definitely.
Congrats on a good appt. I wish you the best the rest of pregnancy. I hope this baby isn’t tooooo big and I hope labor is easy as pie
Best to you ~
You look fabulous, Lucy!
You look so awesome – I hope the baby is of “average” size for you. I teeter back and forth (7’5″, 9’3″, 7′ 13″, 9’4″) so I’m on track for a 7 lb-er this time, right? Only 4 more weeks till we find out, God willing!

You look amazing at 8 months! I also grow big babies. I just had an US at my last appt, 37 weeks and the baby is weighing in at 91/2 lbs already! My first was 10lbs 1 oz. I’m only 5 1′ so I look SO huge! I blame it all on my husband, at 6 4′, also weighing over 10lbs at birth. So not fair that someone elses genes can effect OUR bodies lol! Good luck with your little one
You really do look good to be 8 mths along. Congrats on the new addition to your family!- I ‘m 9 mths pregnant and people keep telling me that I’m going to have twins beacuse I’m so huge but its only one baby. They don’t beleive me!.
