Some Sunshine In My Life
Here’s to hoping that my current bout of sleep deprivation is at an end … at least until July 17th. For the last three nights Cory has finally learned to go to sleep in his big boy bed rather peacefully and quickly. The catch? We had to take away his afternoon naps. What a sad day for mom!
However, we have now instituted afternoon quiet time in our house. That means Cory has to play in his room, by himself, with the door shut (there is a door knob guard conveniently placed on the inside of his door so he can’t escape and interrupt my quiet time) for a couple of hours. He still fights me a little on this one (read: he will occasionally toss toys against the closed door and exclaim, “No quiet time. No want quiet time!” - I just choose to ignore him) but for the most part he complies. I honestly don’t know what I would do without this time to regroup every day. I also think it is good for him to have some independent play time.
So I want to say thanks to all my friends out there who gave me advice and offered me much needed empathy as we went through the dreaded process of transferring Cory from his crib to his bed. You definitely lent me strength to successfully make it through the process!
I also wanted to say thanks to my good friend Becky for sending me this incredible purse she made just for me … isn’t it a beauty?! She is definitely one talented woman and I miss the fact that she doesn’t live close by anymore.

And I must thank my mom, too, for sending me this gorgeous ladybug blanket set (blanket, silkie, burp rag and onsesie) that she crafted. No it is not a present for the upcoming baby, she sent it just for me because yellow is my favorite color and one of my favorite classes in college was Entomology (Bug Collecting).
What has brought some sunshine into your life lately?

Glad to hear it’s going well. And I love the ladybug pattern. Very cute.
Prayers with you!

I’m so glad Cory’s going to bed well! I love the purse and ladybug blanket. Camille still sleeps with the blanket your mom made for her.

Yay for those bits of sunshine! Just yesterday my daughter brought me a tulip. That was a bit of sunshine for sure.

Glad to hear things are going better for you.
What happened with your husbands funding issues? My husband got teaching positions for the summer and funding through next spring. His goal is to be through by next spring and to hopefully have a teaching job.

I think we have also just accomplished the same thing with our kids, at least for the most part!
I’m glad you can get some sleep again! You need it, I’m sure!
I think I have a blanket from the same fabric! I love ladybugs. I also had a neat entomology class in college!

You are one blessed woman! The bag that Becky made and the gifts from your mom are wonderful. When I was a kid (one of six) we had quiet time every afternoon. My mom usually read during that time and I know it helped her keep (most of) her sanity.

yay for sleep! i’m so glad that he has made the transition. i absolutely hate it when i can’t get my own regrouping time. having quiet time in the afternoon is a great plan, and you will be so glad after the baby is born that you have already instituted it.
by the way, i’m just sure that baby number 3 is going to be a piece of cake for you.

We used to have quiet times when the older children were little. We are starting to do those again so that I can have some quiet time all to myself too.
I love those bits of sunshine you received. My aunt recently sent me a chocolate quiz game that has been a lot of fun. She knows me well.

So glad you’re finally getting a little sleep!
And your bag and blanket set are just lovely!

Sorry to hear about the loss of nap time. I definitely am going to have a quiet time when my son stops napping. I need that break!
Love the ladybugs!

Yea, for quiet time. I will be so sad when Kate stops napping so I’ll for sure institute quiet time in her bedroom as well. I agree, it’s a time to regroup for sure. We had to get Preston to sleep through the night so a couple weeks ago we had to let him “cry it out”. He didn’t cry too many nights, but it’s been worth it lately since he’s been sleeping through the night. Phew.

Hooray for good night sleeping! I hear you on missing the afternoon nap though…I love quiet time. I know we all need it!
Loved the purse and blanket, etc. How delightful!

Becky made that for you? It is gorgeous. I am always amazed by the things she creates with so many children to take care of.
I still have the baby blanket and burp cloth your mom made for Sariah. It has been used a LOT and still looks great.

My mother flew in yesterday for a weeks visit. Definite sunshine there!

No nap! Wow-you kids all of you gave up naps early on except one. Quiet time worked sort of. I am wishing you well in you new adventure. Love you.

What a good idea! I had never thought of the quiet time routine—with twins it kind of happened automatically because they played together.

Hope you catch up on your sleep! Those “quiet times” for the kids are great, even if they don’t think so. And they are even better for us moms! Smiles,
Genny

Definitely not the hail and snow we got today! Probably when my three year old puts her arms around my neck and says, “Sometimes I love you Mommy.” It’s so nice to be loved “sometimes”.
Congratulations on the quiet time! I have always wanted to institute that with my kids but never have. I think I will once lovely stops napping though.

I’m sorry to hear you’ve had added struggles. I hope that the young man is now used to his new bed and that you’ll be able to get some good rest. My sister has had the same issues with her daughter. It took time, but all is well now.

So sorry you lost nap time, but yay for night time sleep! I dread going through that ordeal with Becca…any day now, I think.

hmmm, well the sunshine has brought more sunshine into my life of late (amen for sunshine) and A’s long naps are sunny and shiny and hanging out in rural new york has been pretty bright and fun and hmmm…knowing that you’re doing better is pretty sunny too! love you!

I’m a sucker for a beautiful bag, and that one is just plain gorgeous!

Well, I got to go to Women’s conference at BYU yesterday, and I just loved learning and feeling the spirit. This morning I *qualified* to win a trip to Disneyland, which would REALLY bring sunshine into my life if I won.
I’m glad he’s staying in his bed all night. It’s tough to give up the naps, though, isn’t it?
May 3, 2008 at 6:32 am
Let the sunshine in! (sorry it has been a difficult few months for you).
I think the quiet time is a fantastic idea. Maybe I’ll try something similar. But first I’ll have to totally Nora-proof the room so she can’t do damage to herself while she’s in there (or pull out the baby wipes from the container one by one….)

You know, that is a good question because I have been so overworked and stressed lately. But it caused me to reflect upon my blessings and what it comes down to is I’m excited our new couch is arriving today.

As long as mamma is getting her much-needed quiet time, I am all for locks on the insides of doors! Absolutely!
And those gifts are incredible. What a bunch of talented women you have in your corner! Lucky you!
May 4, 2008 at 6:41 am
A Sunshine for sure
And what great people around you to bring such wonderful gifts.
My sunshine was in April when my daughter stayed with me for 4 weeks with her two wonderful daughters. They live in another country so it was truly a sunny month for me.
Good luck in keeping your quiet time!

Tylenol brought some sunshine to my day! Lol!
May 4, 2008 at 4:24 pm
So glad to hear you are doing better. I can imagine how hard it was to give up nap times. But it is nice to have tired kids at the end of the day.
What fun gifts. They are darling!
Everytime I see the tulips in my yard my heart smiles. I am grateful for the beauty all around. When I actually take the time to notice!

Hooray for sleep!! I dread the crib to bed transition, but to have to combine it with the even more dreaded nap to no-nap transition is almost unbearable. But, when a good night’s sleep is on the line, just about anything is worth it.
