The Many Detours In Life
This cartoon lives on my fridge so I can see it daily. I have no idea when I first clipped it out of a newspaper, it had to have been at least 10-15 years ago. But that’s not really my point.
My point is life is always going to be full of detours. In fact, often times I think most of my life is a detour. But that doesn’t have to stop me from being happy and enjoying the ride I have been given.
I CAN learn to be a “truly happy person.” And that stems from gratitude, balance and keeping the proper perspective.
“Life is just like an old time rail journey … delays, sidetracks, smoke, dust, cinders, and jolts, interspersed only occasionally by beautiful vistas and thrilling bursts of speed. The trick is to thank the Lord for letting you have the ride.” –Gordon B. Hinckley

Oh so true! The quote from Pres. Hinckley draws a very clear picture.

That is so true! I think we are gradually picking up speed, but you never know!

That is really true. I remember as a young girl always looking forward to the day that I could meet Mr. Wonderful and live happily ever after. I learned long before I met him that life is about living, not looking for something else. Yes, we have to plan (in my case, over-plan) but we have to enjoy what is going on around us or we won’t be very happy.
Thanks for the reminder!

What a great quote. We can’t wait for life to be perfect so we can be happy. Thanks for the great reminder!

Thanks for this post. I needed this reminder today.

Love it, so true. It’s amazing how we can better control our life when we learn to control our perspective!

It’s easy to forget what it’s all about. Perhaps it’s wise to look for more detours - at least learn to treasure all the sideways on our journey
Good reminder, thank you!

So simple. So brilliant!

Hmmm… Sounds like the life of a parent. Thanks for the thought!

This reminds me of that moment at the end of Anne of Greene Gables, when she realizes that her life isn’t going to go quite as planned because Marilla needs Anne to stay and help because of Marilla’s deteriorating vision. Anne decides to look at it as a bend in the road. She chooses duty and love…and happiness.

I love that! I think it is so true, we don’t know where life is going to take us and many times I think we wait for the destination for us to be happy and it seems we never get there. I try to be happy in the moment and enjoy the time I have now, and try not to look to far forward for happiness… though once the house sells and I am in hawaii I will be happy

thanks for the reminder. who knew that president hinckley and ziggy had so much in common?
i sometimes get so caught up in my “to do” list that i forget to enjoy what comes in between action items.

Love that quote. Used to have it on my fridge for a daily reminder but haven’t seen it since the move (2 1/2 years ago!). Great reminder to enjoy the journey, wherever it may take you.

I’m hoping to hit a “thrilling burst of speed very soon”! Thanks for the pick-me-up.

Here for the first time. I enjoy your blog. Reminds me of a Sunday school lesson long ago that emphasized the greater importance of “climbing the mountain” than “getting to the top.”

What a great cartoon! Quite worthy of a permanent post on the fridge

Funny how easy it is to miss the scenery when you’re cursing at the map and wondering where you’ve gone so wrong as to get off track. It’s truly a choice we make to be happy or not. Thanks for the reminder.

OH, and congratulations on the baby! What happy news.

If we could just get over the “if only” attitude, then I think we’d be on the right path! I love that - gratitude, balance and proper perspective. And of course God, but we both know that
Happy Weekend. Hope you are feeling ok!

That is my favorite gordon b kinckley quote. Nothing wrong with a detour so long as it takes you where you want to go.
March 9, 2008 at 1:06 pm
Really really great. I absolutely agree.

Love that Pres. Hinckley quote. I will miss seeing him this coming April. But all will be well.
