Commonly Misspelled Words

spellingtest.gifShould this word end in -ant or -ent? Is there a silent “e” in this one? Should there be a double “r” or a double “s” in this particular word?

Back in the day I used to consider myself a pretty decent speller. After all, I grew up in the day and age where spell checkers were a novelty … at least until I got to college … so I had to learn how to spell things correctly because I didn’t like always having to look up words in the dictionary. Since then, though, I have become lazy and often times I rely on the computer to fix my quick flying typing mistakes.

To hone up on my spelling powers, I decided to research some of the most commonly misspelled words. Here is a list of what I found. And please kindly inform me if I have any of these words spelled incorrectly:

1. minuscule

2. millennium

3. embarrassment

4. occurrence

5. accommodate

6. perseverance

7. supersede

8. noticeable

9. harass

10. inoculate

11. mischievous

12. pastime

13. separate

And just for fun, here are a few more: preceding, indispensable, definitely, privilege, gauge, questionnaire, existence, withhold, misspell and weird.

If you feel like taking a quiz to see how your spelling abilities compare to others, then check out this site. You will find even more tests on this page.

How did you score? What words do you normally have the most trouble with?

  • Should I be worried that my doctor’s office spells it “innoculate”? Maybe they’re thinking of innocuous, which shots just aren’t! I don’t mind misspelling so much, it’s mispronunciation that makes me crazy! Axed, irregardless, suposebly….

  • Oh God how I detest these common misspellings. It just drives me insane. After having worked as a medical transcriptionist for a very long time, the errors you see begin to just grate on your nerves. Thanks for the little reminder that everyone does it now and again.

  • LOL thank good for spell check.

  • Another word I see misspelled quite often is ‘beginning.’ I love to play Scrabble so I have to know how to spell!

  • I have to chant “i before e except after c” more times than i care to admit!

  • Spelling errors is one of my pet peeves. It’s harder for me now that I live in Canada (I grew up in the US), sometimes I think they are spelling things incorrectly and apparently it is the “Canadian spelling” of the word. For example when my child brings home memos from the teacher that say “Please practise spelling words”. At first I thought, hmm maybe you should learn to spell practice! Just glad I didn’t phone her and say that. :)

  • Sta away frm g33k sp34k… and/or ICanHasCheezbueger! :)

  • I think I spell definitely wrong all the time!
    Happy TT!

  • I so want to put an extra i in mischievous!!!

  • Being a “wordy” person, I loved this post. Very interesting Thursday Thirteen.

  • I have problems with a few words, but I’m not going to make myself blush by trying to type them here. (Did you see that avoidance in that sentence?)

  • oh i am so ashamed! i missed 22 out of 50!!!! i knew i had been relying on spell check too much…..i always misspell ;o) words with double consonants or at least words that i think have double consonants…….time to study up!!

it is so embarrassing when the kids ask me how to spell something and i can’t give them to answer or when i have to ask them how to spell something. thanks for the giggles and the wake up call ~jenn

  • I missed 15 out of the 50. Not the best, but not too bad, right?! I have trouble saying words, and especially phenomenon…did I spell that right?

  • I love this post! I can’t wait to go take the test!

And, that sure is a cute boy you have as captain of that diaper ship!

Thanks for stopping by my blog.

  • I got 40 out of 50, so not too bad. Spelling errors are a definite pet peeve of mine, though obviously I am not always a perfect speller myself.
I’m sure I was more accurate in my Spelling Bee days. The closest I came to winning was 2nd place, though.

  • This has actually been weighing on my mind a lot lately. Mostly because my mind hasn’t been functioning all that well!

  • Now THAT is a useful list. I am so bookmarking this one….

  • I remember misspelling the word “committee” when I joined the Spelling Bee in high school because of the double letters. I cried after because I got the difficult words right but struck out on “committee”, LOL! :o)

  • I’m such a horrible speller!!

  • I am admittedly a spelling snob. Not that I got all your words right, mind you (I agree that spell check makes one lazy!) but I hate misspelling words and I hate reading things with spelling mistakes in them! But not everyone is a great speller, which is fine.
I sometimes think I should have majored in English or something, instead of Biology, and become an editor. I could have a lot of fun with a red pen!

  • Ok, so I was sure that you had spelled minuscule wrong because I’ve always thought I was right for spelling it miniscule. So, I typed it, my way, into word and it didn’t correct it. I checked in the dictionary and it had miniscule listed as a variant spelling for minuscule. I wish the dictionary would excuse all my spelling errors that way. =)

  • Shoot! I missed 7. I pride myself on my spelling, but I’ll give it to the test. Some of these are not ones I use much. They say pride goeth before the fall. ;-)

  • Excellent list! Thanks for this super useful list! :)

  • I love spell check.

  • Very useful. Another one that people have trouble with is ‘professional’

  • I’m never sure how to spell definitely. So thanks!
