Menu Plan Monday – October 1, 2007

menu-plan-monday-planner.png

October?! I think time literally keeps speeding up. I suppose I better make sure we have the kids’ Halloween costumes planned.

And just for fun, here is another food quote. It will probably make you chuckle and think, all at the same time.

We are living in a world today where lemonade is made from artificial flavors and furniture polish is made from real lemons. ~Alfred E. Newman

I grew up with a lemon tree in my backyard so I am a lemonade snob. It has to be fresh and sweet, otherwise it is a waste of calories. My Grandpa’s recipe for lemonade is my absolute favorite. Speaking of favorites, I recently posted my favorite salad dressing recipe. It is simply heavenly and it is easy to make, Poppy Seed Salad Dressing.

Monday: Meatloaf, potatoes and veggies

Tuesday: Chicken, Broccoli and Ziti Skillet (new recipe to try)

Wednesday: Leftovers

Thursday: More leftovers

Friday: Spaghetti and salad with Poppy Seed Dressing

Saturday: Sweet and Sour Chicken, rice and fruit

Sunday: My Day Off

Poppy Seed Salad Dressing

poppy-seed-salad-dressing-smaller.jpgThere is a reason why my dad likes calling me a rabbit, I love vegetables and I especially love delicious green salads. One of my favorite combinations consists of lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, candied walnuts, craisins, corn, feta cheese and homemade poppy seed salad dressing. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. You absolutely have to try this dressing, I guarantee you are likely to fall in love with it. In fact, often times when I am asked to bring a salad to a party, they always request I bring this dressing along.

Poppy Seed Salad Dressing

small sliver of onion (a little less than 1/16th of a medium onion)

1 cup sugar

2 teaspoons dry mustard

2 teaspoons salt

2/3 cup white vinegar

2/3 cup vegetable oil

2 tablespoons poppy seeds

In a blender, puree the sliver of onion. Add sugar, salt, mustard and vinegar. Blend well. Pour oil slowly into the mixture and then blend thoroughly. Add poppy seeds. Blend once more. Refrigerate.

Getting Rid of The “H” Word

smartbutton-705730.jpgI am sure you know exactly which “H” word I am talking about.

No … not that “H” word. I am referring to the one we use way too often when we are a parent, “H-U-R-R-Y.”

“Hurry and grab your coat so we won’t be late.” “Hurry and finish your cereal so you can get dressed.” “Hurry and pick up your toys, it’s bedtime.”

And perhaps one of the worst scenarios, “No. We don’t have time to just play. We have to hurry and get ready for __________ (fill in the blank – soccer, piano lessons, ballet, etc.).”

Our household definitely suffers from what I call the “Hurry Syndrome.” Case in point. Not too long ago I was about to mention something to Keri while she was eating her bowl of cereal and getting ready for school. Before I could even get my first word out, she interrupted me and said, “Mommy, I know what you are going to say. Hurry up.”

Oops.

I don’t even want to know how many times my husband and I utter this word in any given day – what a scary thought. However, starting now, I am going to attempt to ban this word from my vocabulary … and I am not going to replace it with a synonym. We have been plagued by the “Hurry Syndrome” long enough.

I know this new habit isn’t going to be a walk in the park. A lot of planning, preparing, organizing, and learning to let things go and learning to say no is going to have to occur, especially on my part. But it will be so worth it. I despise the franticness and hurriedness that has become the normal pace of today’s society. I detest being rushed. I crave being able to have down time between activities. This doesn’t mean I don’t like to be busy, it just means I prefer not being overly busy.

I am already getting excited about the many positive benefits this new habit is going to bring about. Hopefully there should be less stress in our lives, our kids (and us parents) will be healthier and happier, and we will better be able to enjoy the time we spend together as a family. It will be wonderful to have a little bit more free time and goof-off time.

Commonly Misspelled Words

spellingtest.gifShould this word end in -ant or -ent? Is there a silent “e” in this one? Should there be a double “r” or a double “s” in this particular word?

Back in the day I used to consider myself a pretty decent speller. After all, I grew up in the day and age where spell checkers were a novelty … at least until I got to college … so I had to learn how to spell things correctly because I didn’t like always having to look up words in the dictionary. Since then, though, I have become lazy and often times I rely on the computer to fix my quick flying typing mistakes.

To hone up on my spelling powers, I decided to research some of the most commonly misspelled words. Here is a list of what I found. And please kindly inform me if I have any of these words spelled incorrectly:

1. minuscule

2. millennium

3. embarrassment

4. occurrence

5. accommodate

6. perseverance

7. supersede

8. noticeable

9. harass

10. inoculate

11. mischievous

12. pastime

13. separate

And just for fun, here are a few more: preceding, indispensable, definitely, privilege, gauge, questionnaire, existence, withhold, misspell and weird.

If you feel like taking a quiz to see how your spelling abilities compare to others, then check out this site. You will find even more tests on this page.

How did you score? What words do you normally have the most trouble with?

I Have A Nice Smile?!?

My brain is still a little mushy from the funk I experienced last week, so instead of writing something inspiring, witty or profound tonight, I am taking the easy way out by posting these awards that were so kindly bestowed upon me.

Dedee of The Quiltmaker’s Gift deemed me nice a few weeks ago. I am wondering if she is still singing this tune knowing that it took me almost a month to tell her thanks.

And just today, Aimee of The Mother Load gave me the “You Make Me Smile Award.”

I appreciate both Dedee’s and Aimee’s thoughtfulness. Now I am supposed to pay both of these awards forward, but I have no idea who already has received these honors.

So the winners are … everyone who leaves me a comment on this post!

Congratulations on being nice and thanks for making me smile :) !

One final sidenote. I also wanted to thank Jordan of Mamablogga for including me on her “Most Popular Parent Blogger” list. I was a bit shocked to see my name listed, but it was a pleasant surprise.

I would love to win myself a pink Dyson.

Menu Plan Monday – Sept. 24, 2007

Ever since I can remember, I have always had a quote fetish. I thought it would be fun to share some pertaining to food, after all, eating is something that consumes much of our time:

One of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever it is we are doing and devote our attention to eating. ~Luciano Pavarotti and William Wright

And even though I actually love eating plain, fresh vegetables with a little bit of salt and pepper (I know, I am odd), I still chuckled at this quote:

Vegetables are a must on a diet. I suggest carrot cake, zucchini bread, and pumpkin pie. ~Jim Davis

Monday: Lasagna and veggies

Tuesday: White Sauce Chicken Enchiladas, fruit and veggies

Wednesday: Leftovers

Thursday: Leftovers a.k.a clean out the fridge day

Friday: Creamy Herbed Pork Chops, potatoes and veggies

Saturday: Beef Stew, fruit and veggies

Sunday: My Day Off

Abysmal …

That about sums up my latest attempt at going to bed on time. But I am not giving up, I am not a quitter.

I am determined to start getting more sleep so I don’t wake up and want to continuously hit the snooze button. Waking up already sleepy just seems to make me grumpy and then I take it out on the kids and my husband and then the guilt ensues. Of course getting up with not much time to spare in the mornings makes me feel rushed and hurried. Then irritability and a foul mood need to be factored into the equation.

Obviously it will be good for all members of this household if mom could learn to stop attempting to get everything done in the late evenings. Perhaps I need to take some time to reevaluate my current priorities. What am I spending my time on? What can I change to help alleviate my current problem?

In the meantime, here are some quotes that might help me stay motivated …

OK, maybe I got a little carried away with the inspiring quotes. I think I have had a lot on my mind lately – my husband running into a seemingly insurmountable brick wall at grad school, my grandpa who has been in and out of the hospital recently, and other personal issues which have been weighing down on my mind.

When the world says, “Give up,” hope whispers, “Try it one more time.” ~Author Unknown

Nobody trips over mountains. It is the small pebble that causes you to stumble. Pass all the pebbles in your path and you will find you have crossed the mountain. ~Author Unknown

The race is not always to the swift, but to those who keep on running. ~Author Unknown

It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer. ~Albert Einstein

People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don’t believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can’t find them, make them. ~G.B. Shaw

Don’t be discouraged. It’s often the last key in the bunch that opens the lock. ~Author Unknown

If we are facing in the right direction, all we have to do is keep on walking. ~Buddhist Saying

I may not be there yet, but I’m closer than I was yesterday. ~Author Unknown

Keep on going, and the chances are that you will stumble on something, perhaps when you are least expecting it. I never heard of anyone ever stumbling on something sitting down. ~Charles F. Kettering

With ordinary talent and extraordinary perseverance, all things are attainable. ~Thomas Foxwell Buxton

A door opens to me. I go in and am faced with a hundred closed doors. ~Antonio Porchia

Look at a stone cutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred-and-first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not the last blow that did it, but all that had gone before. ~Jacob A. Riis

How To Successfully Manage the Holiday Season

Jacket weather has arrived. Pull out the rain boots and bring on the simmering cups of hot cocoa laced with caramel and hazelnut and topped with a dollop of whipped cream. Give me a good book, some quiet time and a blanket to cover up with and I will be in heaven … sort of.

With the arrival of Autumn also comes the arrival of craziness. New schedules are being hammered out as kids begin school and other activities. Throw into the mix Fall carnivals, Halloween, Thanksgiving, the Festival of Lights and Christmas. Don’t blink, you very well might miss them all.

Although Autumn is my absolute favorite season, one of the things I detest the most about this time of year is being so harried, frazzled and over booked that I always feel rushed. As a result, I find I don’t get to truly appreciate the spirit of the season unless I plan ahead, stay organized and learn to simplify my life.

Since Christmas will be here in a mere 13 weeks, give or take a few days, I thought I would share some tips I have picked up over the years that have helped me to dispel some of the franticness of the season. These things definitely help me feel more relaxed and not quite as rushed.

1. Write on the calendar. Rule #1 – you don’t have to say yes to every, single invitation … do I need to repeat that? In fact, hold a family council and decide together which activities to attend and which ones can be skipped. Plan ahead for annual events you know always happen and try now to figure out the dates of those things. The Christmas dinner your husband’s boss always throws? I am sure it is planned more in advance than the night before it occurs, which is sometimes when your significant other first tells you about it.

Furthermore, make sure to literally write on the calendar, in pen, some days where you will “Stay Home.” Plan nothing these nights, or use these days to bake those sugar cookies with the kids you have been saying you are going to make for the last three years.

2. Christmas letters/emails. Start those letters soon. Since we are on tight budget while my husband is in grad school, we send out a Christmas/Holiday email to save money on stamps, cards and address labels. Emails also save a lot of time.

3. Convenient family photo. I always like to send out a current family photo with our email, but trying to find a time to get a nice picture taken sometimes seems impossible. Since we get dressed up to attend church every Sunday, I just take our digital camera to Church, arrive a few minutes early, and have a family friend who is handy with a camera snap a few shots. The kids behave remarkably well because they are excited to go to their respective kids’ classes.

4. Finish your gift shopping before Thanksgiving. Some people might argue with me on this one saying you will miss all the good sales, but frankly, I don’t mind spending a few extra dollars when my time and sanity are on the line. And this is coming from a very frugal minded person who is extremely budget oriented. To wreak less havoc on our budget, I also purchase things throughout the entire year and keep a birthday and Christmas stash hidden in my house.

Once you have the gifts, don’t forget to mail them off early. Remember any overseas packages need to be mailed by mid November. If you want to save money on shipping costs, give any gifts to family you might see at Thanksgiving time.

5. Keep a list of the gifts you have purchased. This helps ensure that equal money is spent on all the kids. It also helps to prevent overspending.

6. Keep a few extra, simple gifts on hand. Every year it seems like there is always someone you forget to buy a gift for – your daughter’s school teacher, your son’s soccer coach, the mail carrier, etc. To help you out in a pinch, always keep a few generic presents on hand – a scented candle, a mug full of treats, or a small box of stationary.

7. Purge now to make more room for new items. Before the holiday rush hits in full swing, take some time to help your kids sort through their things. Put away clothes that are too small, pack up toys that aren’t being used any longer, throw broken things in the trash and donate any unwanted items to charity. Don’t forget to purge your own things as well. If space is an issue, when out shopping, think small. It’s hard to find a new “home” in your house for large items.

8. Don’t be ashamed to buy a dessert. Many of us can bake fancy and gourmet treats, but the real question is do we have the time to do so? If you signed up to bring a sweet to the winter party at school, don’t stress yourself out about making something homemade. Costco cookies can be quite delicious.

9. Buy those black shoes now. If you know you will have a fancy holiday party to attend in the month of December, purchase those black dressy shoes and any other necessary accessories you have been meaning to get sooner rather than later. The last thing you need to be doing is picking over the leftovers on a display table in the mall the afternoon of the big event.

10. Enjoy all the Fall holidays. Sometimes all we seem to focus on is December 25th. Every other day is just a means to arrive at this date. Take some time to celebrate the beginning of Autumn, Halloween and Thanksgiving. However, remember to keep things simple.

11. Think outside the box. A successful holiday season isn’t measured by the amount of money one spends or the number of presents one purchases. Instead of buying big ticket items, get creative. Make homemade gifts if possible or write a thoughtful letter instead of spending money. If time is more the issue, utilize gift cards given with a sweet note.

12. Enjoy family time. In a few years time no one is going to remember if you cooked five different soups for the Fall potluck. However, your kids will always cherish the fun memories you created together.

13. Don’t sacrifice your alone time. It is so hard to give to and serve others when your own cup is completely empty. Take the time to adequately rest, exercise, read some good books and enjoy your hobbies.

What helps you to stay calm during the mad rush of the holiday season?
