Movies, Flicks and Films

movie-reel.jpgGrowing up in Los Angeles I used to see movies all the time. In fact, one time I went to four movies in a single day – “Arachnophobia,” “Presumed Innocent,” “The Freshman” and one other one which for the life of me I can’t remember.

However, the older I have gotten, the more precious and valuable my time has become and consequently I don’t frequent the theater quite so often anymore. It also doesn’t help that movie tickets have gotten so expensive, especially when you factor in the price of babysitting.

Occasionally, though, my husband and I still like to watch a good quality show together. Here are a few titles currently on our Let’s-Get-Around-To-Them-Some-Day List. Some of these films are still in the theaters, but the majority of them are already out on DVD which means we will just put them on hold at our local library.

  1. “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”
  2. “Pirates of the Caribbean: At The World’s End”
  3. “Dreamgirls”
  4. “The Devil Wears Prada”
  5. “Casino Royale”
  6. “Miss Potter”
  7. “Music and Lyrics”
  8. “O Brother Where Art Thou”
  9. “Pride”
  10. “Because of Winn Dixie”
  11. “Glory Road”
  12. “Firewall”
  13. “Batman Begins”

Any clean shows you would recommend?

  • I loved The Devil Wears Prada and it took me forever to rent it because I thought it would be stupid. Great list:)

  • There’s a few on that list I still need to get to.

  • I hope you get to see some of them too. It’s always nice to do something relaxing together. Have a great TT. :)

  • This is a great list. I always forget about getting movies from the library. We usually ask for Blockbuster giftcards for birthdays and christmas and that usually keeps us going year round.

  • Oh, definitely see #5 and 13. I loved them both. Happy TT!

  • I loved the Devil Wears Prada! I have been watching alot of movies lately, here’s a few that I enjoyed: Girl Interrupted, Big Daddy, Volver, The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants, Stuck On You

  • Oh yeah, one more… Italian Job is really good

  • I really liked The Persuit of Happyness. I also like chick flicks and liked The Lake House.

  • If you haven’t seen it yet – highly recommend Stranger than Fiction. Looooved it!

  • Loved O Brother, Devil Wears Prada…..I like Because I Said So as well. Breach is a good movie as well. We have Netflix so we are always watching new movies.

  • Great List. Devil Wears Prada was cute. I’d like to see the Harry Potter too.

  • O Brother was a great film. I usually don’t like the Coen brothers’ movies but that was a good one. Devil Wears Prada was based on a book and they just couldn’t resist diluting the actual story with a typical warm and fuzzy Holywood cop out.

  • I loved that “How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days” movie. Also, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Night of the Hunter, Slapshot, The Ref… all for now.

  • I loved The Devil Wears Prada–I would like to read the book. Music and Lyrics was another favorite. Watched both two times. Once in the theater and once on DVD.

  • I liked: 13 Going on 30 with Jennifer Gardner. Even my husband thought it was cute even though it is a chick flick. The Wedding Planner is another one I loved, although it is older and you might of already seen it. Another older one is, What Women Want with Mel Gibson–hope you have fun working through your list. :)

  • For a really good family flick you can’t beat the old timers. One of our favorites is ‘Friendly Persuasion’ with Gary Cooper.

  • O Brother Where Art Thou? is in our DVD collection. It’s a great film. Happy TT.

  • I’ve actually seen a couple of those films! Unusual for me, since I get to the theater almost never (three kids), but Netflix is helping me catch up. I really enjoyed O Brother Where Art Thou. And not just because I’ve got a massive crush on George Clooney. :)

And if you’re looking for good clean films, check out my TT this week — 13 films from 1939. Enjoy!

  • I really need to rent some movies, for sure. Thanks for the reminder! Happy TT!

  • That’s actually a great list. Batman Begins was awesome, although it got a little weird towards the end.

Loved TOOP. This is one of the HP’s that I will buy not just because I have the set, but because I really enjoyed it. I’m nervous about the next movie. I always get nervous when a director says the movie is about “emerging sexuality”.

Haven’t seen the rest of them, though I’ll probably get around to if eventually.

My dh looks like the new Bond! Aren’t I lucky!

  • Good list – I’ve only seen a few (perhaps I need to get out more)! ;-)

  • Hmm, I haven’t seen a single movie on your list either! Guess we need to start renting more movies, lol. ;)

  • I’m not a Bond fan (ever since Sean Connery stopped), I rented “Casino Royale” becuase my son wanted to see it, it’s so awesome! I loved that movie.

O Brother Where Art Thou?, Stranger Than Fiction, High Noon (with Gary Cooper).

  • Miss Potter is in our Blockbuster cue… I’m pretty excited about it! Also, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (we’re slowly making our way through the books… a later evening movie and popcorn with Mom is the “reward” for finishing). I haven’t looked to see what it is rated, but I heard Freedom Writers was also good. But I want to read the book first.

  • Ok, I would put Oh Brother, Where art thou on the top of your list. See it right away. I can’t believe you’ve lived this long without seeing it. I’ve got a copy, would you like to come over for a movie night? You could also pop in Because of Winn Dixie. I don’t think my daughter would mind sharing her movie with you. I’ll pop the popcorn!

  • I’ve seen Dreamgirls and The Devil Wears Prada. Loved them both. The music in Dreamgirls is awesome and really needs to be seen in the theatre, if you can.

  • The Devil Wears Prada made me want new makeup, hair color, and a new wardrobe. *sigh*

  • I’m a lot like you–don’t get to see that many movies in the theater. But I have to second Kimberly. Stanger than Fiction was a riot.

Judging by your list, we like similar movies. :)

  • I agree with Kimberly and Montserrat, I really really liked Stranger Than Fiction. I am also a black and white junkie. My all time favorite oldie is The Philidelphia Story.
