Works-For-Me: Back Up Responsibly

Undoubtedly many of you have heard about “Alec’s Law” which is being proposed by Bill and Adriann Nelson of New York who, a few years ago, lost their son when his grandfather inadvertently backed over him with his SUV. It has been all over the media. I first heard about it while watching my local news here in the Pacific Northwest. The ultimate goal of “Alec’s Law” is to pass a federal bill requiring auto makers to decrease blind zones in larger vehicles such as SUV’s, minivans and trucks. Some blind zones are reportedly as large as 69 feet.

I am not writing this post to argue one way or another for this bill, but I do want to urge all drivers to back up responsibly. Always walk around your vehicle and check behind your car before turning the car on, use a back up camera if you have one, back up slowly, back into parking places when possible, check the surrounding area for potential children, or buy a wide angle lens to put on your rear window.

I also want to urge all caregivers (parents, aunts, uncles, friends, etc.) of children to carefully keep an eye on little ones, especially when you know one of their favorite individuals will be leaving. After all, they have dubbed these back over accidents the “bye-bye syndrome” since often times the child just wants to say goodbye one last time.

Two children die every week in the United States because of back over incidents. I can’t even imagine having to deal with such devastation. I got all teary eyed just listening to the news report.

Let us be more responsible and alert so we can try and avoid these unnecessary tragedies. It works for me, will it work for you?

  • This is one of my biggest fears… Thanks for the reminder to be aware of this, to hopefully avoid this tragedy!

  • this is very important and pertinent! Thanks for reminding everyone

  • I read about this family in Child magazine a month or so ago, and its such a tragic story. I am also paranoid about this and make sure I know the location of all my kids before going anywhere in the car if they aren’t in it with me! Thanks for the reminder.

  • What a hugely important thing to remind us about – thanks so much!

  • This is a great reminder. Everyone in our family knows that when they are leaving, they make sure all of the kids are sitting on the porch in plain sight before they are to back their car out of the driveway. It is scary how often these kinds of tragedies happen.

  • A tragedy like that would change you forever. I’d never want to experience that–thanks.

  • I can’t imagine that kind of tragedy. Thanks for the reminders.

  • This really works for me. I’m not sure why I have a huge fear of this, but it may be a result of the knowing children injured (thankfully only injured!) in church parking lots after church. We all have a responsibility to be super vigilant on this one.

  • Thanks for the reminder! How tragic….. : (

  • Thanks for the reminder. I need to be more aware of this when my kids are in parking lots.

  • Fantastic post and a SUCH an appropriate topic for “Works for Me Wednesday.”

  • I want to thank you for bringing awareness to your readers about the little known dangers of the blind zone behind vehicles. It has not been easy to continually tell our story, but we hope through our efforts in telling the public about Alec, we will prevent another family from being in our position. We do not want anyone else to suffer the loss of their child.
A wonderful resource is kidsandcars.org, and you can read about what we are doing in Alec’s name at alecsplayground.com. Thank you for your diligence in raising awareness.
