SMARTly Acquiring Green and Running Into The Floss Police

Amberli of The McCoys left this quote in one of her comments last smart-smaller.jpgweek so I thought I would share it in case you didn’t see it.

“All good things require effort. That which is worth having will cost part of your physical being, your intellectual power and your soul power.” (David O. McKay)

Habits are obviously hard to make, but hopefully we are all making progress even if the progress is measured in baby steps. As long as we are moving in the right direction, that is what counts. After all, life itself makes habit forming difficult. It’s not like dishes will just stop being dirty or the laundry will just stop piling up or toddlers will all of the sudden start changing their own diapers and cooking their own meals and stop being sick so we can attain our goals … I wish! Instead, we are trying to make permanent changes in our life while still attempting to live in the middle of it. It is going to take time, it is going to take patience with others and ourselves, it is going to take practice, it is going to take sacrifices, it is going to take the desire to stay motivated, but we can do it.

For the most part I enjoy working out, but for the last few weeks I have been in a rut which means it is time for me to switch things up a little. My solution to help me stay motivated and in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, was to purchase this to go along with my new habit:

green-ipod-shuffle.jpg

I have had my green envious eyes on one of these things for a LONG time now and consequently I am thrilled beyond measure to get this all ready to use. My new habit is to run at least once a week, on the treadmill or outside weather permitting. I normally go to the gym five days a week and do a variety of things (cardio classes, elliptical machine while reading, lifting weights), but I want to add running to the repertoire. I used to be able to run 3 miles pretty easily, but running for more than 5 minutes now seems like a chore. However, music has a powerful impact on my mood so I am excited to download 240 high energy songs onto my new postage stamp size device that will get me groovin.

My other habits? Flossing my teeth once a day is moving along nicely even though my dental hygienist last week proudly proclaimed herself the Floss Police when I went in for my appointment. Apparently the floss I use isn’t her favorite because it is too slippery. My philosophy is at least I am flossing … and give me a break, I have only had one cavity my entire life … so there! I am sure she means well, but I am sticking with my Glide. And does anyone else find it annoying funny that when people try to clean your teeth they also attempt to carry on a conversation with you? Hello people, my mouth is currently out of commission, not to mention it is hard to hear anything over the noise of the spit and water suctioning vacuum.

Going to bed on time is still also progressing in the right direction … rather slowly. Amazingly my body has adjusted to the new time change as far as the night is concerned, but getting up in the morning has been positively dreadful. I am hoping, though, as the days get longer and the sun rises earlier that I won’t find it so difficult to drag myself out of bed.

I hope everyone has a fun and Happy St. Patrick’s Day, unless your name is Nerd Boy and then I hope you have a fabulous birthday! And speaking of St. Patrick’s Day, Keri has been obsessed with leprechauns this week since part of her homework assignment for the month was to design a Leprechaun Trap.

  2. I had unofficially dropped out of SMART habit Saturday because I have found myself completely UNmotivated. But, after reading this and thinking about what I want for myself…I must rejoin! Thank you so much for your encouraging words. You are doing a wonderful job. I got an Ipod Nano (?) for my birthday and have yet to fill it up…need to do that. Have a great weekend!

  3. I love my Ipod. I am sure that you will love yours, too. Podcasts and music are wonderful to keep you motivated. Love the leprechaun trap! Blessings to you!

  4. I’ve often wondered how the dental hygenist expected me to converse while she was cleaning my teeth. And even the dentist and his assistant try to chat when my mouth is propped open and full of stuff. Makes no sense to me at all.

  5. Sure an begorah lass, ya can’t catch a leprachan with out Lucky Charms. HAPPY ST. ME DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t think the hygenists/dentists spend enough time in the chair themselves–otherwise they would remember how tricky it is to utter anything intelligible with a numb mouth full of metal and rubber gloved hands. Yeah, I hate the dentist. Then they charge you an arm and a leg, and send you home numb and later, in pain. grrr… Can you tell I just visited my dentist this week?

Congrats on your new little green machine!! So cute, and you will love it!

  7. I like the green color! Good luck on keeping your habits this week!

  8. I love your new toy! I would love one those to listen to music on while I exercise. I hope it helps you. I only use Glide too for my teeth, even though I’ve had 8 teeth pulled and braces. They’re still too close. lol I think it’s silly they ask questions too. Ask me when we’re done. :P Good luck with week with your goals.

  9. I have loved my ipod! My sweetie got it for me and I am like the teenagers(not quite) and take it everywhere! I have a bit bigger one so I have tons of talks and such on mine. Just keep on going, we all have to stick together! Better today than yesterday, better tomorrow than today!

  10. Lovely post! I spent St.Patricks Day cleaning the house while Hubby and the children were at the Parade. Then, in the evening I was asked at short notice to babysit the neighbours two little girls!

It’s Mothers day here in Ireland, look how I spent the morning…

  11. I love Keri’s trap. She is such a cute! As far as the habits go keep up the good work and HOORAY about adding running to your work out regimen! Becoming a runner CHANGED MY LIFE! I know it sounds cheesy, but it’s true. I can’t wait for the warm weather to kick in so I can get out and about and start running more! Good luck with your goals!

  12. Nerd Boy

Thanks for the Birthday wish! While living in Utah, I never realized what a big holiday St. Patrick’s Day is … for DRINKING. What a fitting birthday for me.

One of these days I really need to set a goal for flossing everyday. I’m being bitter and sticking it to the man by not flossing right now. (And yes, I realize how stupid that is.)

  13. Adorable photo and inspirational post all in one! I really appreciate that you bought your Ipod in my favorite color. At least I know you were thinking of me. You were, right?

  14. Great habit to add. I’d love to add it to mine, but it’s not realistic at this point. Maybe some day. Love the green Ipod. Have a great week!

  15. Thanks for stopping by my blog with encouraging words for my SMART Habit Saturday post. I’m making progress: Baby steps here people!

  16. Cassie

Great habits— but the type of floss you use does matter! Even if you don’t get cavities it’s important to floss correctly to avoid gingivitus (check out the scary link to heart disease…http://www.lef.org/protocols/dental/gingivitis_01.htm)…You should try Flix interdental sticks; I picked these up at SuperDrug and according to my DR they’re more effective then just flossing because of their shape and woven mesh floss. Plus, they come in better flavors then glide, like florida burst : ).
