A Few of My Favorite Used Things

“Fix it up, wear it out. Make it do or do without.”

This is a motto we love to apply in our home, especially since my husband is till pursuing his Ph.D and money is tight and also because we like to make the money we do have stretch as far as it can. Therefore, I thought it would be neat, maybe a little too telling though, to do a post of 13 things in our home that are old “vintage”. Everything is either a hand-me-down or has been around for at least the last thirteen years. Of course one of these days it will be nice to replace some of these items with newer models … right now we make do with what we can afford.

1. My old comforter from when I was a tween. Keri uses it on her bed.

2. This couch was a hand-me-down to Rudy’s older sister when she got married and that was 16 years ago. If I had been daring and taken the dsc01742.JPGcover off you would have seen that the original couch is thread bare … most of the yellow cushion that is supposed to hide under the fabric is visible. At least it is super comfortable. It makes a great bed, especially for afternoon naps.

3. A 1984 Los Angeles Olympic phone back from UCLA when my grandpa and Dad used to work there. We keep it on hand to use when we lose power.

4. This dresser also dates back to at least my Junior High day. A few of the drawers have been glued back together and do you notice which handle has been replaced?

5. These pictures are both old. Don’t know where they originally came dsc01738.JPGfrom, though. The Ansel Adams I got from my Dad’s work, someone left it so I claimed it. The other one came from my sister’s sister-in-law and it was originally handed down to her.

6. This dictionary and stapler used to be my Dad’s. They are keepsakes now.

7. We have some old onesies that we have used on our kids that are dsc01747.JPGfrom my younger twin sisters who are now 16. These t-shirts are from my high school volleyball years. They make great workout or pajama shirts.

8. This night stand is at least 35 years old. One of these days it would be fun to restore it.

9. This tape recorder is from Rudy’s mom. We keep it around to record random things.

10. Some of these puzzles are passed on from my uncle, so they are at least 40 years old. However, the kids love them!

11. Old Hot Wheel cars. I think the oldest one is from 1976. Cory is obsessed with his cars.

12. When I was 16 my mom made me a bunch of these little red drawstring dsc01752.JPGbags for me to use as a counselor at Girls’ Camp. I gave them to all my campers with a little treasure and quote inside. I still use all the leftover ones. They are perfect to stuff in purses and diaper bags. If I knew how to sew better, I would make some more.

13. There’s nothing like using your mom’s old baking ware. I use these pans all the time when I make my mom’s monkey dough rolls!

  • Nice list! And now sadly, TT will be an old thing. :(

  • I can’t believe that this is the last T13! I didn’t even realize it until I went to add my link! But, I love your T13! We have several “vintage” things in our house as well. It’s hard to say No to free hand-me-downs! I have a “vintage” night stand that used to be my grandparents – which we currently use for a TV stand in the bedroom. I could go on and on, but I’ll stop now so as not to write an entire post in your comments! ;) Have a great day!

  • Very fun post!

I had a tape recorder like that – it belonged to my grandma first. I used it in my car in college that didn’t have a radio. Made “mix” tapes at home…so funny to think about now in the age of CDs and iPod shuffles.

My favorite vintage possession is a set of RenaWare pans my grandma gave me when I had my first apartment. She bought them in 1955 from a door-to-door salesman. When she gave them to me, she still had the little instruction booklet with a happy 1950s homemaker on the front. I love the pans – they still heat and cook the most evenly of any I own and I will likely never get rid of them, though I might have to replace a couple of the handles or knobs. I really should post about these – I love them so. Thanks for making me think of them!

    Great T13.

  • Thursday Thirteen has come to an end.
I have enjoyed my visits here and consider us friends.
Thank you for sharing your thirteens with me.
The comments you left me filled me with glee.
It is hard to believe it is really true.
I am trying very hard to not be blue.
    Happy TT’ing!

  • Great ideas! I’m a recycler, also. Happy Final TT.

  • Cool list. We do some of the same things in our house too.

  • I love your “vintage” stuff! I have some kid puzzles very similar to the ones you have that my girls played with as children. Some of them are now at least 30 years old and my grandchildren enjoy them.

I love these posts where people share some of these types of keepsakes. Maybe one of these days I’ll do a similar post.

  • What a fun post! It has inspired me to look through our home for our “vintage” stuff. I know my son would love that old tap recorder -how fun!

p.s. I posted my quiche recipe for you ;)

  • I like to hang onto stuff and re-use it, too. And I think half of what we have is probably hand-me-downs! You can’t beat free! I love it. Thanks!

  • I might just do a post on that! haha…I love “vintage” things. And I love that they call them vintage and not old/used…makes it sound so much better!

  • You have some really awesome keepsakes! We have a lot of things passed on from my hubby’s parents/grandparents and to me these are treasures!

You are indeed blessed and bravo to your hubby for going for the degree!

  • YOU STOLE MY PHONE!!!!! I WANT IT BACK!!!!

**Little brother, I didn’t steal your phone … that was from UCLA and from Dad. Silly boy! But thanks for the comment.**

  • Really fun post. My daughter is using my old comforter on her bed! It must be 32+ yrs old! :)

  • Okay, I sooooo love this post! What a neat idea!

We’ve just started replacing our vintage stuff and boy, what an emotional journey!

  • The night stand was part of a vanity dresser and the big round mirror was attached to two of them. They were your Grandmas and Grandpa’s. They were 40 years old when they gave them to us in 1970 so that makes them 70+. The bake ware were my mom’s and were really hard to give up but I knew you would love and take care of them. They are at least 60+ years old. That dresser was bought in 1985 for more drawer space for $25. What a fun post. Fun trip down memory lane.
    Love you

  • I’ve actually been thinking about this lately because I am doing a “photo scavenger hunt” for swap-bot and I have to take a photo of something that I have had for at least ten years and I think that I am going to take the photo of my Cabbage Patch blanket that I got for like my 6th or 7th or 8th birthday or something. I LOVE it and my mom had to sew a pink sheet onto the back of it only a few years after I got it because it was getting worn out and all the stuffing was coming out. It’s a great “vintage” blanket!

  • What a wonderful list! I love vintage stuff, I have and still use a lot. The pen I got when I graduated, my dad’s fountain pen, my mum’s purse, etc!
I’m so glad T13 will continue, that I’m doing an extra round! My TT shows 13 pics of me.

  • You are a great example of living within a budget. You will love your eventual purchases so much more because you really “earned” them!

  • The trend today is replace, buy new, expand and upgrade. I love that you hang onto things that have personal value to you and your family. One of my favorite objects in my home (aside from the living ones of course) is a huge old pickle crock that belonged to my grandmother. She used to make bread and butter pickles in it back in the day when life was more simple and people had time for that kind of thing. If there ever were a fire in my house I would have to save the kids first and then run back in for my pickle crock.

  • I’m a little late showing up here, but I just wanted to compliment you for walking us through these used items. I think it’s a responsible and meaningful choice these days, like the comment above points out.

Most everything in my house I purchased used–and of the used items, a huge amount is from Goodwill. I don’t know what people think of this around here (we live on a rather wealthy side of town–I probably wear or sit on my neighbors’ castoffs), but it’s what we can do. If we had more income, I don’t know if we’d change. I’d probably still prefer used–like I said at the top, I do think that it’s responsible (I don’t know if Goodwill is exactly *meaningful* like your family items…:)).

    Have you heard about Compacting?

  • Oh…I had wondered where the other night stand went…a mirror used to be in the middle. Remember? (Or was that pre-vintage?) I am using the matching night stand. No plans to restore.
