Need. More. Sleep.

One of my New Year’s resolutions this year was to start going to bed earlier so last night I rushed to get ready and in bed by 11:30.  Mostly meeting my deadline, I curled up under the covers very excited to fall into the blissful world of La-La Dreamland.  After all, I have been so utterly exhausted lately because I have been trying to get back into the normal routine of things.  However, my insomnia kicked into full gear last night and soon the clock read 11:48 then 12:54 then 1:46 then 2:22.  Needless to say I was very sad at this current state of affairs.  I don’t think I even dozed off until almost 4 am and then the alarm clock belonging to DH soundly went off at 6:00 am.  Grrr.

So here are 13 things that happen to me when I don’t get enough sleep.

  1. I get very grumpy.
  2. I get very irritable and annoyed and I am very easily overstimulated by anything and everything.  No singing, humming or whistling allowed.
  3. The dark circles that normally reside under my eyes look even worse.  [Long story short - don't dive for the ball in volleyball even if you are the setter and even if you called the ball if somebody else is going to go after the same ball who is wearing a metal knee brace.  Needless to say I had 2 black eyes for 4 weeks.]
  4. I want to take a nap in the afternoon when I have a gazillion and one things to do.  Even if I ignore everything and give into the nap, then I am just aggravating the vicious cycle of staying up late and not being able to fall asleep when it is time to go to bed.
  5. I become a tyrannical dictator to my kids and husband.   I have no patience with them and I am not very nice.
  6. I have no energy.
  7. I become lazy.
  8. I am assaulted by headaches.  I should probably buy stock in Excedrin … or Coke and Tylenol.
  9. My ability to reason and think greatly decreases.
  10. I become forgetful.
  11. My appetite for foods that are inherently unhealthy for me increases exponentially.
  12. My ability to drive, cook, speak, spell, etc. becomes greatly impaired.
  13. And I can’t even think of a number thirteen because my brain has shut down.

Obviously I need to train my body to start going to bed earlier and I am thinking this might be a harder process than I orignally thought.

And before I forget, Happy 88th Birthday to my dear Grandpa!  This picture was taken in June of 2005 when we traveled to California for Cory’s baby blessing.  He is holding Cory who is about 4 months old.

  • Number 2 on your list is me exactly when I am over tired.

I hope you get enough rest soon!!

  • Ugh, I feel your pain - I’ve been there more nights than I care to contemplate. Diet Coke and Sudafed is a good combination to keep you going until bedtime (but don’t take it if you’ve got high blood pressure, Sudafed is less than stellar for high blood pressure).

Hope you can get a good night’s sleep tonight.

  • I’m so sorry! What a pain…makes me grateful for a good nights sleep! I’m sorry you have to deal with that! Ugh!!! Good luck..

  • Oh Lucy! You poor dear… I wish I was there to take your kids for you. (I hate living so far from everyone.) Insomnia sucks and I’m sorry you have problems with it!

  • I hear you. I’m struggling to stay awake today too. and I only went to bed at 11. :) My normal bedtime is 10pm - to be asleep by. I’m a crank when tired too…
I hope you get some sleep tonight!

  • Oh man, I”m totally #5 and #9! I also get crabby. Very crabby.

    My 13 is up.

  • Oh Man, can I totally relate to #5, 8 & 11. I haven’t been sleeping through the night for a few months now!

  • I used to be a nightowl but my family is full of early risers! I used to try to “buck the system” and stay up late anyway, but ended up living out your Thursday 13. Pregnancy has turned me into an early sleeper and made my hubby VERY happy with me. LOL.

Hope you have a better sleep tonight!

  • I’m aiming for a go to bed at 11pm and get up at 7am. Problem is I’ve always been a night owl!

  • I have bouts of insomnia about every 2-3 months. A cup of chamomile tea can be quite helpful, although sometimes I wake up having to go to the bathroom which defeats my purpose! ;)

  • I agree with your list.

    My 13 is up.

  • What a yeuchy state of affairs. Dialing back bedtimes for kids is supposed to be done in 15 minutes increments - maybe the same applies to us? =P

Sleep deprivation can actually be a serious health risk - hope you get it licked soon!

  • Heres to more sleep in 2007! precious picture

  • You’re problem is that you are female. MBW has problems with insomnia occasionally too. Being male, all it takes for me is to look at my pillow and out I go. This usually makes MBW mad. She doesn’t think it’s fair.

Now that I wrote all that, I should probably delete it because items 1 & 2 considered, you are probably mad at me now because I had a good nights sleep last night. It reminds me of that time we were playing bid at 1:30 in the morning and I called you sensitive which made you really mad. You forgave me that time so rather than delete it, I’ll just hope you forgive me this time too. Of course this time I just stated a fact (i.e. you are female) so that shouldn’t have offended you, as opposed to last time when I unknowingly dug up deep emotions from your past by describing your emotional state. Did I mention that I ramble a lot when I’m tired and that unlike some people, 10:30 is very late for me?

  • I apologize for my husband. He is:
    1. male
    2. silly
    3. pesty

Don’t hate me because my husband’s a pest!

  • Nerd Boy - Forgiveness granted … but you only have one forgiveness left … J/K :) . And by the way, did I hear you asked for cookies last night when you were supposed to be getting ready for Dreamland? Where are mine?

Minerva - Husbands will be husbands.

Now, I really need to get ready for bed … here’s to hoping I can sleep tonight. I had no nap today so I better saw some good logs.

  • I love number 7, if only because I’m always lazy. Of course, tiredness can be counteracted by Red Bull or some similar energy drink.

Have a great day tomorrow, and keep writing!

  • Hummm,
You could have written that list for me, but the thing that really threw me for a loop was when nerdboy said MBW (which happen to be my initials too) had similar problems. I wondered for a second when the Duke joined the blogging world!
I hope you sleep came quickly tonight.

  • I can’t remember the last time I had a full nights sleep! I’m usually woken by any one of my children. Usually it’s the youngest. He’s two and sleeps in our room. He wakes and wants to get in our bed! Hubby hates that!

  • We are like peas in a pod.
I have sleep trouble and I am quite certain that is the major cause of my migrains.
    It is such a struggle.
I hope we will both be successfull in fixing our problem!
    Have a great day!
    My TT is posted

  • Are you sure we weren’t separated at birth? 1-13 the exact same here.

Unfortunately, for me these days I feel like I can never get enough sleep. I LOVE my sleep!

    Crystal

  • Crystal - Who knows, maybe we really were separated at birth :) . After all, I LOVE sleep as well!

  • Uggghhh, my insomnia is acting up just reading this! All I can say is, I hear ya sister!

  • ooooh, that sounds awful. I’ve never struggled with insomnia, but I know people who have. BLESSINGS!

  • I agree with you here!!!! ME TOO!

  • [...] night I don’t think I got more than a few hours of sleep due to a visit from my old nemesis - insomnia. Hopefully it won’t reappear [...]
